Spanning (MiaxLana, PG)
Title: Spanning
Fandom: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Completion date: October 13th, 2008
Wordcount: 328
Rating: PG
Pairing: MiaxLana
Prompt: I've had "Bridge Over Troubled Water" stuck in my head for a few days now, which is fine because I like the song. But I'd kind of like to read some fic based on it, please. Doesn't have to specifically reference the song, just have that underlying "I'll be there for you when things are hardest" theme. Any unusual pairing (please not P/E, K/A, Miego, P/M, or Fradrian), with a little preference for femslash. Also no Gavincest, please; I just personally don't like it. Can be fluffy or angsty. Short and sweet is all I need.
Sleeping light meant that she noticed things, details, patterns. Dark-soft rest called her and so did the irritated rattle of textbook pages. A sigh filtered through the walls. And then more pages, turning familiar.
Lana rose, and pulled slippers back on. The alarm clock screeched red numbers for her to ignore.
By the time she padded into the commons room, the rattling had stopped. Mia slumped, forehead propped on one hand, hair cloaking her face. The night held its breath as Lana approached, into the puddle of lamplight, picking through the scattered notepaper. The couch springs creaked as she sat carefully beside Mia, and that was question enough.
"I don't understand this." A mumble like the whole night summed up in a word.
That theory class again. Lana pressed her lips. "You passed that quiz, didn't you?"
"But I don't understand." A thick pause. Mia's fingers stirred under her hair, maybe tracing hard circles around her eyes. "I-I have to, I just ... I can't let her down."
She wondered what it must be like, sometimes, to be so blazingly full of things. Lana found Mia's free hand and began threading their fingers, only began before Mia looked up, wearing a watery smile.
"What are you doing up ...?" Another rub at her face, stirring shadows. "It's too early for class yet."
Lana rolled the truth on her tongue, there in the still night. She glanced to their laced hands. "I may be able to explain it better for you, that's all."
She caught that bright fire stirring in Mia's eyes -- as usual, as always -- as Mia laid on her shoulder. They settled, into all but an embrace with a legal precident text across their laps, and Lana stuffed her nervous thoughts away again. She'd never had a friend quite like this one. Why compare?
"Let me know if you ever need anything," Mia said, relief snug in her voice, "Okay?"
Because careers be damned, they were on each other's side. Lana smiled, and turned a page.

I almost forgot about this one. But yeah, I've been compelled lately by that period of Mia's life where she's alone: the branch family is presumably no help, Maya's just a kid, and there probably weren't any easy real-world connections. Maybe Misty pulled a string or two behind the scenes but Mia wouldn't have known there was someone working for her like that. She's unbelievably strong, to be a successful, confident business owner by 1-1.
Aaaaand there'll be a pile of Wright-A-Thon fic in a few days. :D
